Journalism May Be Collapsing, But With Pressfolios, At Least You Can Build A Nice Portfolio
If you’re a working journalist (or even an aspiring one), you’re probably getting tired of hearing that it’s important to build your personal brand. Now, leaving aside the obnoxiousness of the phrase “personal brand,” I suspect we hear it so much because it’s kinda true. A startup called Pressfolios aims to make it easy for journalists to build that brand through an online portfolio.

Every journalist needs an online portfolio to store their cuttings and show off to potential employees when looking for some new work. Few reporters are also trained Web designers though and adapting free blog platforms such as WordPress and Tumblr can be an arduous task. Pressfolios is the latest site to offer reporters and budding bloggers a purpose-built platform for displaying their work.

No layoffs at Patch today
AOL CEO Tim Armstrong told Patch editors Friday there would be no “impacts,” or layoffs announced today. The “impacts” will arrive on a rolling basis over the next week, he said. Armstrong said in an earnings call earlier this week that AOL would sell or close as many as 300 underperforming Patch sites.

Many years ago I was taught that success is not dictated by age or tenure, but rather ambition, creativity and drive. This simple idea is the foundation upon which I've founded two startups: The Daily Collective and Pressfolios.

For much of the past five years, I've been a communications specialist for hire by day and a startup founder by night. In my experience, I prefer summer over winter. I like iced coffee and the smell of Coppertone. I love digital media, storytelling and startups.

When unplugged, these are a few of my favorite things: Surfing, sailing, fishing and riding bicycles on city streets. I also have a slight obsession with stories written by Neal Stephenson.
